Yamaha U Series

The world’s most popular upright.

Precise, ultra-responsive touch, clear, full-bodied tone and a reputation for reliability have made U Series pianos the choice of professional musicians, conservatories, teachers, students and music lovers, the world over. Add to that our legendary attention to every detail of every piano, and it’s no surprise that the U Series has been the world’s most popular upright for over half a century, and a respected choice among musical professionals and institutions.

Thanks to comprehensive redesign, these world-standard instruments are better than ever, with numerous advances in materials and construction. Refined scale designs and components improve tonal performance, while other modifications enhance strength and durability. Extra-wide music desks provide plenty of room for sheet music. And the top-of-the-line sets extraordinary standards of elegance and excellence, incorporating concepts adapted from Yamaha grand pianos.

  • Advanced Scale Design
Refinements in all elements of sound production have given today’s U series a richer , more resonant voice with evenly balanced timbre across the entire keyboard.
  • Soundboard and Frame
Special rib configurations add strength to the soundboard, while back post and other advances further enhance rigidity, resonance and structural stability.
  • Redesigned Hammers
U Series hammers use materials specifically selected for each model to provide optimum tone production, response and long-term durability.
  • Soft-Close Fallboard
A damping mechanism, formerly used only in grand pianos, prevents the fallboard from dropping abruptly onto the keyboard, guarding against accidental injury or damage.

The finest woods

The U Series soundboards and ribs are crafted from solid spruce that has been hand selected at our Kitami Mill in Hokkaido, Japan giving these pianos a richer, more resonant voice and evenly balanced timbre across the entire keyboard.

Back posts; forward-thinking

Years of cutting-edge research, including Yamaha’s proprietary wood-drying process, result in back posts that maintain their shape, strength and resonance for years to come.

Advanced V-Pro frame

Yamaha was the first company to use advanced Vacuum Shield Mold casting technology (V-Pro) to create a stronger, lighter, more durable piano frame. Every b Series frame is built to exacting specifications at the Iwata Forge in Japan.

Specially designed hammers

U Series hammers are crafted of the finest materials and painstakingly designed for each model to provide optimum tone, response and a lifetime of musical enjoyment.

Hand-wound bass strings

Yamaha artisans in the factory in Kakegawa, Japan oversee the winding of pure copper, and adjust the balance & tension of each bass string to the exacting standards and sound profile of every U Series piano.

The world’s first aluminum action rail

Often copied but never equaled, the patented Yamaha aluminum action rail helps assure their piano keyboards are resistant to tiny fluctuations in humidity and temperature over time.

Soft-close fallboard

Inspired by their grand pianos, Yamaha’s damping mechanism prevents the fallboard from dropping abruptly, guarding against accidental injury or damage.
